PTO NEWS

Spring is in the air!  That can only mean one thing- time for our SPRING FLING.  Please mark your calendar for April 25th.  Instead of just ice cream, this year we will be having dinner, game booths and...of course, ice cream.  This year we are trying to raise money for needed items for our new sixth graders. 

Speaking of sixth grade, we are very excited about Michell School becoming LivermoreÕs only K-6 school.  Hopefully we can expand to seventh and eighth!  Hats off to everyone involved in making this possible.

A special thanks to those who participated in our annual (newly named) Grandpa Higgins Penny Drive; it was a huge success.  We raised $1,207.77 all of which we donated to ÒTeam KCÓ.   The top 3 fundraising classes (Ashworth, Zalte, and Cortez) enjoyed a pizza lunch.

I wanted to let you know that Korrine CroghanÕs family was so touched by Michell studentsÕ ÒBig HeartsÓ; they have stopped me many times just to say thanks.

PTO elections will be held and voted on in May at our PTO Meeting. If you would like to nominate someone or yourself, please put your nomination in the Ballot Box located in the school office. Take time to step up and volunteer for your childÕs school. ItÕs very rewarding. All positions are currently open.

We have many plans for the next couple months. Watch for the Yearbook Signing Party.  PTO will be sponsoring the Open House BBQ - details to follow.  We will be showing our appreciation to teachers and staff by hosting a lunch after state testing.   Be sure to thank the teachers for all their hard work and dedication.

I would like to wish all students ÒGood LuckÓ on their state testing. Take the time to get lots of rest and eat well so you are ready for testing!

Parents: Remember they are only little once, so take time to enjoy them. You will not regret it! You only will regret it if you donÕt!

Bienvenidos de Regreso a la Escuela! Espero que hayan tenido un buen descanso por Pascua.

Gracias Padres de Familia, Maestras, Personal de la Oficina y Guardianes por una esplendida Noche de Orientaci—n para el 6to. Grado!!!

Me gustaria agradecer a la Organizaci—n de Padres y Profesores PTO por el gran trabajo realizado el  viernes pasado en la Orientaci—n para el 6to. Grado.  Felicidades y gracias a todos quienes asistieron para hacer  esta noche posible.

Es incre’ble saber que el œltimo trimestre ha comenzado y pronto los 5tos. Grados  entrar‡n  en una nueva etapa muy significativa, una etapa importante  de  transici—n para encaminarse a los a–os en la Escuela Secundaria.  Mientras la transici—n est‡ en la mente de nuestros estudiantes de 5to. Grado, la Escuela Michell estar‡ llena de actividades y eventos que se efectuar‡n en el transcurso de estas 9 semanas restantes de escuela y a una incre’ble rapidŽz.  La Primavera puede ser un tiempo del a–o escolar que  trae a los estudiantes muchas distracciones, tanto por el mismo descanso, como por las agradables temperaturas del clima.  Quiero recordar y motivar a los estudiantes en permanecer enfocados en sus estudios y poner el mejor esfuerzo en las clases para asegurar un Žxito total al tŽrmino de este a–o escolar.

El œltimo trimestre sirve de  momento crucial para nuestros estudiantes.  A medida que van madurando, la informaci—n que ellos han adquirido comienza a juntarse y les permite tener varias oportunidades para aplicar esos conocimientos.  Adem‡s, con la finalizaci—n de varias actividades del a–o escolar, los estudiantes deben recordar que necesitan mantener las espectativas de buen comportamiento y disciplina.

Las Pruebas de STAR comenzar‡n del 28 de Abril al 8 de Mayo y todos los estudiantes tomar‡n esta prueba de artes en lenguaje y matem‡ticas.  Los resultados de estas asignaciones ser‡n usados para ayudar a determinar el progreso del estudiante y el avance promedio del nivel de grado.  Los resultados de las pruebas STAR son tambiŽn una de las mœltiples medidas usadas para identificar a los estudiantes para el Programa de Ni–os Talentosos o los estudiantes que acadŽmicamente estan en riesgo.  Si usted esta interesado en aprender m‡s acerca del Programa STAR, puede visitar la p‡gina internet del Departamento de Educaci—n @ www.cde.ca.gov o si esta interesado tambiŽn en trabajar y  practicar con su hijo(a) alguna de las pruebas que le preparen para la prueba STAR, puede vistar www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sr/css05rtq.asp

Noticia Importante:

   Por las siguientes razones desanimamos a las familias para comenzar las vacaciones antes del per’odo oficial de fin del a–o escolar:

● No habr‡ contrato de estudio independiente para el fin del a–o escolar.  Las maestras est‡n elaborando las asignaciones finales de todos los conceptos importantes aprendidos durante el a–o escolar. Si su hijo(a) deja la escuela antes de este tŽrmino, no habr‡n asignaciones y la maestra no podr‡ medir el Žxito de su hijo(a) en la escuela.  El puntaje en estas asignaciones  ser‡ de cero (0), el cual afectar‡ las calificaciones del grado.

● El segundo nivel de preocupaci—n es el legal.  Los Padres de Familia tienen la obligaci—n legal de enviar a sus hijos a la escuela.  Las excepciones se aplicar‡n si los ni–os estan enfermos o si hay un duelo en la familia, pero por lo dem‡s, los padres tienen responsabilidad legal en asegurarse de la asistencia de los ni–os a la escuela.  La escuela es responsable en reforzar estas leyes y exigir el cumplimiento de los problemas de asistencia.

● La escuela y el distrito pierden mucho dinero por la falta de asistencia a la escuela.  Los Padres de Familia saben de la situaci—n financiera del Distrito Escolar y saben que necesitamos de esos fondos en estos momentos.  Dejar que los ni–os falten a clases afecta su educaci—n, tanto en tŽrminos de aprendizaje como de recursos financieros disponibles para la escuela.

● La pŽrdida de fondos no solo afecta al ni–o(a) que est‡ ausente sino tambiŽn a los dem‡s, lo cual nos lleva a una preocupaci—n acerca del nivel de Žtica.  Este nivel de Žtica considero que  es el m‡s preocupante.  No solo hace que la ausencia voluntaria del ni–o a la escuela afecte a toda una comunidad y su aspecto financiero, sino que adem‡s su hijo(a) est‡ recibiendo un mensaje equivocado de que la escuela no es importante, que las reglas se han hecho para romperlas y que la observancia a la ley es solo en nombre y no en esp’ritu.  Esta, probablemente no es la lecci—n que queremos que nuestros hijos(as) aprendan.


Queremos educar al ni–o en todos los aspectos y estamos de acuerdo que los estudiantes deben compartir tiempo consus familiares, pero hay varios feriados de 3 — 4 d’as,  feriados del d’a de Acci—n de Gracias, descanso de Primavera y dos semanas para el descanso del invierno, ademas de un largo per’odo de vacaciones de verano para alentarlos.  Por favor envie a su ni–o(a) a la escuela durante todo el a–o escolar.

a Spring Fling

 

What: An evening of food, game booths, ice cream & fun!

Where: Michell School MPR and Courtyard

When: Friday, April 25, 5:00 - 7:00 pm

Why: To raise funds to update our library for the new 6th grade program!

 

Tickets will be used for all food and games. All tickets will be

sold that night for 50¢ each. (Some booths may require more than 1 ticket.)

 

Here is a basic list of 6th grade materials that our library does not have and the costs associated with purchasing them: Social Studies research material ($1500), Science research material ($1000), Core novel sets ($600), Extended Literature Selections ($200), AR tests for literature selections ($50), Expanded Fiction/Non Fiction for higher readers ($1500).

 

Your generous support is greatly needed to make this a successful event.

Lost and Found

Lost and Found is overflowing (again)!Please take a moment to look through the clothes in the bin.Any items that are not picked up by the end of the year (June 12th) will be donated to a local charity. Thanks!

El espacio asignado para los objetos perdidos esta sobrecargado una vez m‡s.  Por favor t—mese un momento para mirar por prendas u objetos que su ni–o haya perdido.  Los objetos o prendas que no son retirados al final del a–o escolar (June 12th) ser‡n donados a obras de caridad.

   At the flagpole/awards ceremony on April 2, students were honored for showing ÒFairness.Ó Students named for this honor were Keith Brown, Garrett Ochoa, Tyler Staut, Karen Ortega, Spencer Johnson, Virginia Verduzco, Axel Esparza, Gareth Salazar, Lucas Williams, Yareyesi Nieto, Adin Mitchell, Alex Gutierrez, Danielle Leon, Jeremy Hester, Brendan Elliott, Hector Salcedo, and Miguel Negrete.

   On Friday, April 4, the students enjoyed a Pizza Lunch with the Principal. Their pictures are posted in the office.

 

Library News
   Jennifer Low and her family,  Brendan Elliott and his family, and Abby Rothe and her family recently contributed funds or books to the Library. Many thanks to them for the wonderful new books that we were able to purchase. Thanks also to Mrs. Montano for her book contributions to our Library.
   The spring SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR is coming. It will be held the week of Open House, which is May 12-15. I always need some extra help, and it is a fun way to get involved in our school. Please give me a call or drop in if you would like to help, and I will schedule you after school or during Open House. I will be setting up on May 9, and if that is a good day to come in and help, let me know.
   Please make sure that your  student(s) return all books to the Library when they are done. They are unable to check out more books if they have an overdue book, and sometimes a reminder from home is helpful.

Battery Recycling

Program at Joe Michell

    As a GO GREEN school, we have begun a battery recycling program here at Joe Michell. Used batteries can be delivered to school and placed in specifically marked containers in the Science Lab, room 18. Batteries that can be recycled are: (1) Alkaline & Carbon Zinc (heavy duty) and Zinc Air button batteries (hearing aid type) - place in BLUE container; (2) all rechargeable batteries - place in GREEN container; (3) disposable Lithium photo and coin batteries - place in RED container.

   Batteries that are bigger than your hand, weigh more than 3 pounds, or vehicle batteries, CANNOT be recycled at school.

READ-A-THON

The 5th Annual READ-A-THON has come to and end, and it was a huge success!  Our grand total was over $2900!!  Michell families contributed $2000 of that total, while the rest will come from a generous donation by STARBUCKS.  Team STARBUCKS provided coffee, guest readers, and tons of smiles for students and teachers on Read With Me Day!  Our Michell students will greatly benefit from all your generosity!  THANK YOU all for your support!  A special thanks to Katie McClane, Tina Gregory, and Barb Brinkley for their assistance with Read With Me Day!  As always, the funds raised by this event will be used to purchase much needed books for each classroom at Michell!  KEEP READING!!!!
